A fun week with a close friend
I decided to take a couple weeks off from blogging to spend some time with a close friend from college, Millie. She flew in from NYC for a week of fun here in good ol’ Michigan. Millie has boundless energy, like a firecracker that never stops exploding (a stark contrast to my laidback demeanor) so I made sure to plan many activities while she was here.
She arrived on Sunday and as soon as she got off the plane, we headed to Pontiac for PUG Fest, a festival catered to local bands. She got to meet my band mate, Dave, and we spent the night listening to awesome acts such as Sydney Sprague from Philadelphia and Easy Beach from Detroit. We ended the night with drinks at Griffon Claw brewery in Birmingham where Millie had one too many drinks and told us about the time she squeezed her cat so hard, it shit all over her. Suffice to say, I didn’t let her near my cats when we got home.
Throughout the first half of the week we went to some of my favorite lunch and dinner place. O.W.L., Kouzina, Kura Sushi, etc. were all on the list. On Thursday, we went to the Detroit Zoo (the picture for the blog was taken in front of the beautiful fountain at the center of the zoo) which she was thoroughly impressed by. She even admitted to it being better than any of the zoos in NYC! Afterwards, we treated her to pasties which she claimed was “just a pot pie.” But any Michigander would know that… yeah… that’s basically what it is.
We did a few more smaller activities, but on her final day we took a historical kayak tour along the Detroit river. It was hosted by Detroit River Sports and was a fantastic time. We kayaked down the river and along historical canals where we would stop and the guides would give us history trivia about the area. We learned that there are more Model T’s in the Detroit River than anywhere else due to their involvement in prohibition… and how they’re there because the weight of the alcohol caused them to go tumbling over the bridge. We learned about famous mansions that hosted wild celebrity parties, and one was even featured on a paranormal show. When we got home, we watched the episode immediately—it was horrible.
As we sent Millie off, we reminisced about our times in college and how we became such close friends. We are polar opposites, but I think that’s what makes our friendship strong. We were always able to provide new and insightful comments to counteract each others opposing thoughts which always made our conversations interesting. I am also very glad she and my wife get along so well.
I will always be thankful for Millie’s friendship and can’t wait to see her again!
